Introduction

Equinox is located at four different locations in the state of Illinois. The four locations are Highland Park, Lincoln Park, the Gold Coast, and the facility I evaluated was the Chicago loop location; located at 200 W. Monroe Street with hours of operation. Equinox is a commercial/club setting open to the public. Equinox has six specified areas for working out. The gym offers a yoga studio that is also used for the group fitness classes, Pilate’s studio with the original Pilate’s equipment, sauna room, steam room, and a cycling room. In this two story gym the second floor is where all the equipment is located. Equinox hosts fifty cardio machines ranging from ellipticals, treadmills, bicycles, and stair climbers. A really neat machine that Equinox possesses is the power plate. In addition to the cardio machines there are free weights and a wide variety of strength machines available.

On staff Equinox has twenty-seven personal trainers in their different tiers available during hours of operation. Tier 1 consists of the trainer being able to develop programs designed to achieve a strong, sound fitness foundation, including base cardiovascular health, muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. Tier 2 the trainer is capable of developing programs designed to achieve strength, balance, conditioning, and coordination. The tier 2 trainers possess a solid coaching experience and are skilled problem solvers who can address a variety of fitness and weight management issues. Tier 3 personal trainers are seasoned coaches who have distinguished themselves with exceptional problem solving, leadership and program development skills. The highest level a personal trainer can reach with Equinox is tier 4; top level personal training with customized on-going nutritional coaching to maximize results for the client. Each tier personal trainer offers four different sessions. The sessions available are single, twelve, twenty-four, and forty-eight. Each different tier of personal trainer has different prices per session. Tier 1 single session is $90, twelve is $86 per session amounting to $1032, twenty-four is $83 amounting to $1992, and forty-eight at $79 equaling $3792. Tier 2 single $100, twelve is $95 amounting to $1140, twenty-four is $92 amounting to $2208, and forty-eight $87 equaling $4176. Tier 3 single is $110, twelve sessions is $105 equaling $1260, twenty-four sessions at $101 coming out to $2424, and forty-eight sessions at $96 resulting in $4608. Last but not least tier 4 single session is $120, twelve is $115 ending in $1380, twenty-four at $111 amounting $2664, and forty-eight sessions at $106 per session totaling at $5088. All sessions expire six months from date of purchase, as well as all sales are final.

The club rates that Equinox offers are the single location in the loop monthly dues of $136 with an initiation fee of $395. The Chicago access rate has an initiation fee of $525 with monthly dues of $152. The all access rate requires an initiation fee of $645 and monthly dues of $178. Equinox does offer and executive membership that has an initiation fee of $645 and monthly dues of $235 which includes all access, private executive locker room, permanent oversized locker, laundry service, internet access, Wi-Fi access, Fiji water, and fruit. There is also a new membership benefits package that offers and equifit evaluation, personal training session, private Pilate’s session, two one week memberships, and two one day guest passes totaling to $830.

The demographics of Equinox are primarily the business white collar working class above the age of thirty. The bulk of business is between the hours of 11am to 1pm. Group classes are offered in that allotted time frame however majority of the classes are offered earlier in the morning and later in the evening. Equinox does offer laundry services, lockers on hand, cool towels during workouts, and coat check, on top of the spa in each specified locker room.

Safety

Equinox did not have a posted emergency response evacuation plan unless it was behind the check in counter it was not accessible to the main floor where clients are working out. The staff is educated and qualified to execute the emergency response/evacuation plan. AED’s were on site to assist in the potential risk of someone undergoing cardiac arrest. The facility was very clean and exceptionally well kept. There were no physical or environmental hazards to the naked eye. The facility was properly lit in certain locations of the gym but not the entire gym it’s self. Heating, cooling and ventilation were adequate. Equinox does not have a parking issue as it is valet parking only.

Programs

Equinox offers all the type of exercise programs I am interested in; they offer personal training, aerobics, strength training, yoga, pilates, and spinning. All exercise programs are developed by qualified nationally certified exercise instructors and will be modified to meet the member’s needs. This facility does make specialized programs related to medical conditions but not for specific age groups. Equinox demographics consist of adults, no children, infants, or adolescents. Equinox does offer fitness assessments and personalized exercise programs on request and if personal training is what the member is inquiring.

Business Practices

The staff at Equinox does not pressure you into purchasing a membership, the staff lets the gym and amenities speak for themselves. At this particular facility the membership fee does not fit into my budget even though there are different memberships offered with all the service fees posted this facility is too expensive for young adults. A consumer friendly task that Equinox performs is emailing and mailing out forms/bulletins informing members of any changes in charges, services, and policies. At time of membership signing Equinox provides you with a written set of rules and policies regarding the facility and informs the members of their own set of responsibilities.
